Do you divide your day into 8 hours for work, 8 hours for life, and 8 hours for sleep?

By Rodrigo Costa

The 8–8–8 rule is a popular time management strategy. It suggests dividing your day into three equal parts: work, life, and sleep. This can help you get enough rest and relaxation, and also have enough time for your work and personal life.

Is it possible to work only 8 hours a day? Only you can answer that!

Here are some tips that might help you:

  1. Set goals, prioritize tasks, and manage your time.

Short-term goals: These goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Medium-term goals: These goals should be achievable in 1–2 years.

Long-term goals: These goals should be achievable in 5–10 years or more.

2. Prioritize your tasks by using the ABCDE method:

A: Must be done today.
B: Should be done today or tomorrow.
C: Could be done this week.
D: Can be done next week or later.
E: Can be delegated or deleted.

3. Use a to-do list to keep track of your goals and tasks:

Take breaks to stay focused.

Delegate tasks to others when possible.

Say no to requests that are not a priority.

Avoid distractions such as turning off your phone, notifications, and email.

Here are some tips for making the 8–8–8 rule work for you:

  • Be realistic about your time commitments. If you have a lot of work to do, don’t try to squeeze it all into 8 hours. Be prepared to work some extra hours, or to delegate tasks to others.
  • Be mindful of your energy levels. If you’re feeling tired, don’t try to force yourself to work or socialize. Take a break and recharge.
  • Be flexible. Things don’t always go according to plan, so be prepared to adjust your schedule as needed.
  • Find ways to enjoy your life outside of work. This could mean spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, or simply relaxing.

I hope these tips help you to make the 8–8–8 rule work for you!
